Can you have too many access points?
When implementing WiFi, there are many different issues that can occur that impact connectivity, so determining exactly what the issue within a network is can be very difficult. A range of factors such as user density, high-density walls, and power levels can all impact network performance significantly, but an issue that many people don’t consider is the possibility of too many access points on a network – particularly when the signal strength appears to be high, but the network is not performing well.
When there are too many access points running in a given area, because of overlapping channels, interference occurs. In the UK, there are only three channels that don’t overlap with one another, so channel interference can quickly become an issue when there are too many access points in a given area, especially for larger businesses with higher network requirements.
At TEC-ID we offer site surveys to design networks that don’t experience problems like these by ensuring we offer non-overlapping channel solutions. Site surveys allow us to create a design that considers every aspect of the area you need signal in, such as if there are several floors, materials that might be blocking signal, and much more.
Although some WiFi equipment comes with collision detection/avoidance tools, it is still worthwhile having a professional site survey conducted, as if channels overlap and there are too many access points, the network will definitely perform poorly, regardless of these tools.
WiFi site surveys mean that your business’ network optimal access point placement throughout your premises, and therefore spotless coverage throughout your premises. To see more about TEC-ID’s site survey services, see our services page linked below.
